The Lehigh Valley Health Network has developed a widespread public awareness campaign that emphasizes distracted driving, in particular cell phone use and texting, called Cell Limit Zero. The overall goal is to prevent car accidents by informing the public about the dangers of distracted driving.
“Every day we multitask to accomplish the items on our to-do list. If we multitask while driving, however, we put ourselves, our passengers, and other drivers at risk.
Distracted driving is any activity that takes your attention or eyes away from driving and increases your risk of getting into an accident. Distracted drivers cause crashes. Each year, 6,000 Americans die in car accidents caused by distracted driving, and cell phone use is by far the greatest distraction. Studies indicate that talking on a mobile device quadruples your risk for an accident (raising it to the same risk level as driving drunk). “If you’re text messaging, you are eight times more likely to crash,” says trauma surgeon Robert Barraco, M.D., with Lehigh Valley Health Network.”
In order to help spread the word about Cell Limit Zero and the dangers of distracted driving, the Lehigh Valley Health Network has created tools such as the Free Smart Phone Application that will respond to incoming texts with a message that lets the sender know you are driving and will get back to them when it is safe. Other tools provided are the ability to send an email to your friends and family making them aware of the facts of distracted driving, and a place to tell your stories of how you have been affected by distracted driving.
