The community support and outpouring of donations and other forms of help are going a long way in helping the Allentown victims of the gas line explosion that rocked the city on February 9, 2011.  The first of six fund-raising concerts, dubbed “Hope for Allentown I”, collected $3,000 in cash and four vans full of household goods, the concert organizers say.  A gospel concert with the same purpose raised more than $1,000, as well as donations of clothing, shoes and seasonal coats, toiletries, and household items for the families of the disaster.

More than 300 people attended the first fund-raising performance, held at the Fairview Fire Company Social Hall in Allentown last Sunday, to enjoy the 10 featured performers and donate goods and money to the victims.  The event was hosted by Matt Metal of radio station WXLV-FM 90.3, and for six hours helped to entertain all of the supporters in attendance.

The event featured performances by Sharon Elaine Band, James Supra Blues Band, The Paul Green School of Rock Lehigh Valley Bank Street Band, Sinister Realm, Allie Santos, and Gina “G-Child” Morganello.

Organizer Gloria Domina, of Lehigh Valley Music Awards and Women in Art in Pennsylvania, was especially grateful to the Fairview Fire Company for two reasons; not only did Fireview donate $300 to the cause, but the entire venue and space for the show were also donated as well, making the proceeds go that much further.

The other fund-raising event, The Gospel Benefit Concert, was held at Union Baptist Church in Allentown on Saturday and featured the Lehigh Valley’s The Holmes Family, also known as OnTime, and several other guest vocalists.  The concert was free to attend, while donations poured in from the supporters.

Both organizations will give 100 percent of the donated money and goods to the families affected by the blast.  The donated items were mostly taken to St. Luke’s Neighborhood Center at 435 N. 7th St. to allow “easy access to the items for those who need them most,” organizers said.  The Hope for Allentown Concert series will continue through May 1, 2011.  View the full article on MorningCall.com for more information.

There are so many people who want to help the victims of the blast, making the concert series a true blessing to the people affected.  If you attended either of these fund-raising events, we’d love to hear about your experience!
