While it’s fun to go outside when it’s snowing to build forts, have snow ball fights, go sledding, and make snowmen, it’s not safe to let your children be outside all day long. So how do you keep them entertained when they’re cooped up? Here are 12 indoor activities that are fun for them as well as you!

1. Make Homemade Playdough
Put 3 cups of flower, 1/2 cup of salt, 3 tablespoons of oil and 1 cup of water in a large mixing bowl, and mix well. You can now divide the piece of play dough into four or more smaller pieces. If you like, and have it on hand, you can add food coloring to make your dough brighter. All that’s left to do now is play with it!

2. Start a scrapbook
Do you have printed pictures that you’ve been meaning to put into an album? Sort through them with your kids, relive the memories, and finally get them organized! Have each child glue their favorites onto paper, then bind the pages together with string.

3. Have a puppet show
Start by making your own puppets from everyday items you’ll find around your house.

4. Setup a Scavenger Hunt
The link above has a variety of ideas to get you started. An indoor scavenger hunt can keep your children busy for hours!

5. Remember boardgames?
It’s a perfect day to break out a classic boardgame, such as Monopoly, Clue, or Sorry. Bet you haven’t played those in a while!

6. Write a song
Pick a melody the child knows well, and make up silly lyrics. The best part is watching the playback if recorded!

7. Start a family tree
If you don’t already have one, start your family tree. What a great way for children to spend time on a snow day; learning about their heritage.

8. Make a cake
Have a box of cake mix and a can of frosting? Make a family cake and let the kids do all the decorating!

9. You can’t go wrong with indoor forts
Transform the family room with tents, and pretend you are camping in the snowy wilderness. If you have a fireplace, even better!

10. Make musical instruments out of household items.

11. Have artsy kids?
Keep them occupied by covering a table with newspaper and provide them with plenty of glue, scissors, beads, construction paper, and markers. Step back and watch as their ideas come to life; you never know what they’ll come up with!

12. Video games; yes, I said video games!
Design a friendly, family competition around their video gaming. Parents against kids, boys against girls, just make it fun!

Chances are that when your kids have off from school because of the snow, you’ll be home with them when you would normally be at your regularly scheduled job, activity etc. Take advantage of this extra day with them by making it memorable and fun. Take pictures, then create a scrapbook of the day!

What are your favorite indoor things to do with your kids on a snow day?
