It seems the Lehigh Valley is just bursting with good news lately, and this particular bit of news makes me feel proud to call this area home. We’re just a few short weeks away from the celebration of the Lehigh Valley’s first Sensory Trail for the blind and visually-impaired!
The walking trail, accessible from Farr Road and adjacent to Cedar Crest Boulevard, is a half mile long and consists of self-guided posts-and-rope to enable the blind and visually impaired to explore nature in a safe environment designed specifically for them.
We have members of the Lehigh Valley Business Group, the Wildlands Conservancy, the Center for Vision Loss, Plantique, Cedar Crest College, and Devin Garcia, an aspiring Eagle Scout to thank for this addition to the area.
“The creation of the Sensory Trail will create lasting connections to nature for blind and visually impaired residents throughout the region,” says Chris Kocher, president of the Wildlands Conservancy. “The Sensory Trails complements our existing programs centered on land protection, environmental stewardship, and outdoor education.”
One milestone that will forever be remembered by Cedar Crest College students enrolled in Dr. Amy Faivre’s “Conservation Biology and GIS lab”, is the time spent mapping an area of the Wildlands Conservancy through snow and rain this past March. These maps were then used by Plantique to render the master plan and 3D presentation for the plantings used in the trail.
On June 27 at 3 p.m. at the Pool Wildlife Sanctuary in Emmaus, there will be a celebration to mark this first sensory trail!
