Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, located just north of the Lehigh Valley in east-central Pennsylvania, is the world’s first refuge for birds of prey. Open year-round, visitors will enjoy scenic views, 8-miles of ridge and valley trails, a Visitor Center, bookstore, a native plant garden, and the chance to observe large numbers of hawks, eagles, and falcons, depending on the time of year.
Hawk Mountain provides a variety of adventures for the whole family, making it one of the best ways to spend a day outdoors, and is also one of the Lehigh Valley’s best places to hike. Starting April 1, 2012 and continuing through May 15, 2012, join the official counter at North Lookout to watch for returning raptor migrants and other birds. Staff, interns, and volunteers will be on hand to help you spot and identify what you see so it’s a great time to learn more about the migration and in-flight ID tips. The peak migration watch time is April 15-22.
Discover your inner scientist on Wednesday, April 4th from 11am – 12pm with a guided natural history walk where you will be able to take in the sights, sounds, and nature of the sanctuary. There is a trail fee of $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $3 children 6-12. Be sure to dress appropriately (remember it can be windy on the trails), bring water, and definitely don’t forget your camera!
Can’t get to Hawk Mountain during the day? Check out the Mountain Moonwalk, planned for April 6th, at 8pm. See the full moon rise over the Kempton Valley on a guided trail walk that lasts approximately two hours. You and your group will listen for owls and other nocturnal wildlife and discover what it’s like to be a creature of the night. Call the Visitor Center between 9am – 5pm at 610-756-6961 to reserve your space with a credit card. This awesome program fills up fast, so call today! The cost for members is $10 and $20 for non-members.
Easter at Hawk Mountain is so much fun with their Raptor Egg Hunt, the annual, nature inspired egg hunt that always receives rave reviews from both parents and children! The egg hunt takes place from noon – 1:30pm on April 7 at the Outdoor Amphitheater and is limited to first 50 who pre-register their child’s name and age. Call 610-756-6961 to reserve your spot.
