The Lehigh Valley is full of things to do, see, and experience, including museums and a variety of other arts and culture activities and events.  The city of Allentown is proud to announce the grand re-opening of the Allentown Art Museum which took place on October 16, after what seemed like a lifetime of planning and preparing to enhance and update the amazing place to rediscover art and culture.

Here are a few of the things you have to look forward to the next time you visit the Allentown Art Museum:

  • The Museum Entrance
Back in 1975, during the last expansion, the entrance was moved.  During this update, it has been restored back to the portico of the 1901 neo-classical church that has housed the museum since 1959.  It now has a better design that leads to the lobby and the expanded museum store and cafe.  The museum has expanded by 7,900 square feet.
  • The Glass Facade
The most noticable enhancement to the museum (from the outside anyway) is the $15.4 million addition that now extends to the Fifth Street sidewalk.  Absolutely beautiful and it serves a purpose.  The glass facade now lets people walking by be able to see inside of the museum, catching a glimpse of artwork and exhibits.
  • Decorative Arts Corridor
There is a hallway on the first floor that leads from the main entrance to the other galleries and you will notice that for the first time it is being used to highlight certain exhibits.  Currently on display are Baroque and Renaissance master prints.
  • More Special Events and Traveling Exhibits
This season promises to be unforgettable and better than even with more special events, lectures, and traveling exhibits including the “Much Ado About Everything Family Festival” on October 23rd from 12-4pm. A perfect family event, you will enjoy an afternoon full of inspired art activities, special performances, wandering minstrels and much more!  All ages are invited to wear and show off their unique Renaissance-inspired costumes.
  • The New Cafe
It’s not open yet, but this December the museum will house a brand new cafe that will overlook a new sculpture garden along Linden Street.  The sculpture garden will serve as a park where events can be held.

The excitement has been building since the museum was closed to start renovating almost a year ago and is finally open for people of all ages to visit and enjoy everything it now has to offer.
