The number of places to hike, bike, walk, or just enjoy what being outdoors has to offer is endless in and around the Lehigh Valley.  Many memories have been created and set in stone with pictures of the breathtaking scenery, sunsets, as well as friends and family from any of these hiking places.  Whether you enjoy a relaxing walk along trails full of things to see or an exhilarating hike along jutting rocks and cliffs, there is something for the adventurer in all of us.

The Appalachian Trail, which flows through 14 states from Georgia to Maine, boasts a few of the most popular places to hike near the Lehigh Valley, starting with The Cliffs & Bear Rocks.  This short hike is just under 5 miles long and is full of breathtaking scenery.  It takes about 3 hours to hike the entire trail and consists of areas of jutting quartzite that makes for rocky footing.  Be sure to wear appropriate sneakers or boots for this trip!

Bake Oven Knob, located near Lehighton, is another favorite along the Appalachian Trail, offering one of the most scenic trails to the Lehigh Gap.  Sandstone and quartzite rocks are the obstacles, and the trail climbs through piles of them along the 9.5 miles.  It takes about 5 hours to hike from Bake Oven Knob to Lehigh Gap, and will be one of the most beautiful environments you’ll see.  Be sure to bring your camera on this hike, as you never know what you may see flying overhead!

Another popular hiking destination, especially for families with little ones, is Hawk Mountain, located along the Appalachian Trail.  Hawk Mountain offers a variety of trails, each a different level of difficulty.  If the views, the hikes, and the hawks are not enough, there also is local antiquing,
a thriving community of local artists, and great local eateries to make the entire day of one of making memories and having fun.  Hawk Mountain is open daily, year round, and has become a popular place for school field trips and offers a year round schedule of programs and workshops.

Glen Onoko Waterfall Trail is truly one of the most beautiful hiking destinations near the Lehigh Valley, located in Jim Thorpe.  With waterfalls cascading almost 900 feet in vertical distance down the side of Broad Mountain in the Poconos, this trail is a spectacular place to hike any time of the year.  The Glen Onoko Falls trail is a challenging hike up steep and rocky terrain that holds secluded wonders that many never see but are unforgettable to those that do.  Be sure to wear comfortable, supportive sneakers or boots when hiking at Glen Onoko, and don’t forget your camera!
