There are many reasons why the Lehigh Valley is a desirable place to live, raise a family, and receive an education, with top-quality healthcare being at the forefront. One of the most exciting aspects of the healthcare system is the opening of the only Children’s ER in the region, designed specifically with the little one’s needs in mind. It was the next logical step in the already amazing array of services offered by Lehigh Valley Health Network, as children deserve the best possible care they can get.
The brand new, 12-bed facility will provide specialized emergency care for children from birth to age 18 and will be open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Children’s ER is staffed by board-certified pediatric emergency physicians, certified pediatric emergency nurses, and other health care professionals specially educated to address the unique medical needs of children. Also on staff are child-life specialists to help children cope with the fear associated with a hospital visit.
Going to the emergency room is a stressful and trying time for everyone, especially children, who don’t know what awaits them. The Children’s ER provides many tools to help them stay calm, relaxed, and knowing they are among people who care and will keep them safe. “The Children’s ER is designed through the eyes of a child,” says Children’s ER medical director Andrew Miller, D.O.
- A dedicated waiting room to eliminate the anxiety children may feel seeing sick or injured adults
- Pain management methods like creams that numb the site of a needle stick and the availability of “laughing gas” (nitrous oxide)
- Distraction techniques that use bubbles, music, movies or sugar-coated pacifiers to manage anxiety
- A fun décor, including interactive video displays on the walls and floor that help keep children distracted
“Our goal is to provide care as painlessly as possible,” says Richard MacKenzie, M.D., the health network’s emergency medicine chair. “Research shows severe pain and worry can stick with children for a long time, even permanently.” The opening of the new Children’s ER within the Lehigh Valley Health Network is a huge step in the right direction for all aspects of providing the best care possible.
The Lehigh Valley Health Network includes three hospital facilities – two in Allentown and one in Bethlehem, Pa.; ten health centers caring for communities in four counties; numerous primary and specialty care physician practices throughout the region; pharmacy, imaging, home health services, and lab services; and preferred provider services through Valley Preferred. Specialty care includes trauma care at the region’s busiest, most-experienced trauma center treating adults and children, burn care at the regional Burn Center, kidney and pancreas transplants; perinatal/neonatal, cardiac, cancer care, and neurology and complex neurosurgery capabilities including national certification as a Primary Stroke Center. Lehigh Valley Hospital has been selected as a National Cancer Institute Community Cancer Centers Program and is a national Magnet hospital for excellence in nursing.
The quality of healthcare your family will receive in the Lehigh Valley is among the top reasons to live here, and with the addition of the Children’s ER, you can rest assured your children will be in the most capable hands.
