The United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley is helping the families of the Allentown gas explosion for the long term, incorporating many ways to donate, support, or provide assistance to the victims of the February 9, 2011 tragedy. With your help, the UWGLV can ensure that the Allentown families will continue to succeed in school, are financially self-sufficient, and thrive in our community once again! The United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley has two ways to offer assistance: through United Way-funded programs and services AND through direct financial support, with one hundred percent of the funds donated benefiting those affected by the blast.
Direct Financial Support – In partnership with Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley, United Way’s Allentown Family Fund can now provide direct assistance to families in need. Direct support could include vouchers to purchase goods or services and replace or repair lost items. CACLV ensures that there is proper accountability to reassure donors that their donations are being used in the most responsible way.
Support Through United Way Programs/Services – Donations to the fund can also be invested through the programs and services of the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley’s many partner agencies to assist explosion victims as they get back on track and rebuild their lives. Funds donated can specifically be put toward assisting them with long-term basic needs such as rebuilding their households, counseling services for family members, and educational services for children.
It was recently announced that additional partners have taken a leadership role in assisting the Allentown Family Fund. Local businesses, including TD Bank, Air Products, and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs are encouraging others to join the effort. UGI Utilities, Inc. helped UWGLV launch the fund last week with a $25,000 donation. TD Bank started a “Coins for Caring” collection and will jump-start the funding drive with a $5,000 donation. Joining as contributors to the Allentown Family Fund are the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, Rodale Inc. and RCN, among others.
Donations can be made online, or mailed or dropped off to United Way offices at 2200 Avenue A, 3rd Floor, Bethlehem, PA 18017. Checks should be made payable to “United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley.” Indicate “AFF” (Allentown Family Fund) in the memo. Should donors wish to designate further, indicate either “Direct Support” or “Program Support” in the memo.
The tragedy that stuck Allentown on February 9 continues to leave residents and families to pick up the pieces, in the hopes that one day soon it can be looked at as a thing of the past. Although none of the victims will ever forget their experience in the gas explosion that rocked the city, all are hopeful and grateful for any and all assistance that has been and continues to be provided. Thanks goes out to the outpouring of generosity, events, and benefits that have raised funds and other support for the victims.
