Almost twenty-three years ago, Donald and Susan Southerland founded Coldstone Creamery in Tempe, Arizona, a true innovation in the ice cream industry. Five and a half years ago, husband and wife team, Steve and Roseann Remaly of Allentown, Pa, opened the first Lehigh Valley Coldstone Creamery at 1042 Mill Creek Rd in Trexlertown, bringing with them their amazing family to operate the homemade ice cream store! Another two and a half years later, Steve and Roseann opened a second Lehigh Valley Coldstone Creamery location at 1530 Cedar Crest Blvd in Allentown, Pa.
After spending 33 years in the garage door industry, Steve wanted to fulfill his dream of owning and operating a franchise with the members of his family. When the opportunity came to be a part of the Coldstone Creamery franchise, Steve accepted and the family-owned and operated location in Trexlertown became a reality!
“I wanted my family to be involved, but I wanted them to decide for themselves if they wanted to be a part of the venture”, Steve says. Now, two of Steve and Roseann’s three children play an active role in operating both Coldstone Creamery locations. “My son Brad is the General Manager of the Trexlertown location and is also responsible for all of the local marketing ideas, while one of my daughters, Lori, is the shift manager and lead cake decorator. I would be lost without my wife, Roseann, who runs the business end of both stores, as well as Pat Martin, a family friend, and assistant manager at the Trexlertown store.”
Coldstone Creamery is far from your typical ice cream parlor. Every item is homemade,

“One of my favorite things about owning the Coldstone Creamery’s in the Lehigh Valley is our involvement with the Make-A-Wish Foundation“, says Steve. “We start by selling stars for $1.00 during the month before the Make-A-Wish night, which is usually in September, then the real fun begins!” A child from the Make-A-Wish foundation is chosen to visit the Coldstone Creamery in Tempe, Arizona to invent their very own recipe for a new ice cream flavor. Steve says, “the child actually gets to go behind the counter and make their own ice cream, adding whatever their little heart desires.” That ice cream recipe is then sent to every Coldstone Creamery to become the Make-A-Wish Night’s free ice cream. For 3 hours, three-ounce scoops of the ice cream are free, with donations going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Every year, Steve has invited the children from Make-A-Wish and their families to come and help give out the free ice cream. “For three years in a row, the same girls and their families have come to both of the stores to help and have fun. They love it and that’s the most important part!”
The atmosphere that Steve and his family projects in both of his Coldstone Creameries in one of fun, encouragement, learning, and loyalty. “Every summer, I have between 4 and 6 returning employees who can’t get enough of working at Coldstone”, says Steve, “and that’s the biggest statement someone can make about the way things are run here.” Have you ever been to a place where you ring a bell in recognition of good service?
