Every second counts when dealing with a stroke, a serious medical emergency, and the third leading cause of death in the U.S.  A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts or when a blockage develops.  If not treated immediately, the brain cells begin to die and can result in serious disability or death.  Learning to spot the symptoms of a stroke can be the difference between life or death.

Symptoms
1.  Signs of a stroke may include sudden numbness or weakness of the body, especially on one side.

2.  Sudden vision changes in one or both eyes.

3.  Sudden, severe headache with an unknown cause.

4.  Sudden problems with dizziness, walking, or balance.

5.  Sudden confusion, difficulty speaking, or understanding others.

Give the Stroke Test: Talk, Wave, Smile
The F.A.S.T. test helps spot the symptoms of a stroke.  It stands for;

Face – Ask for a smile, does one side droop?
Arms – When raised, does one side drift down?
Speech – Can the person repeat a simple sentence? Do they have trouble or slur their words?
Time – Time is critical. Call 911 if any of these symptoms are present.

Being prepared to recognize the symptoms of a stroke can save someone’s life.   Learn more about the kinds of strokes with this visual slide show.  Always call 911 if any of these symptoms are present as time is critical.
