Parade Magazine is selecting an all American Service Team, a team of 15 high school students from across the United States, to be honored for the role they play in their communities. Parade Magazine will honor the 15 students in Washington, D.C. later this month with a ceremony to recognize how they shape the communities they provide services for.
Emmaus High School junior, Akshay Damany, is one of the 15 teenagers being honored in the Sunday edition of Parade Magazine. Damany was selected for his active teaching of tennis to autistic children. He hopes to one day take his program, “Akshay’s Tennis for Autism Program”, to the national level.
Excerpt from morningcall:
Damany has been working with autistic children for a little over a year now. He came up with the idea after watching a documentary on autism. After doing some research on the developmental disability, he figured autistic children may be more inclined to participate and succeed in his sport rather than a team sport.
Akshay offers a weekly clinic at The West End Racquet Club in Allentown, where he currently has 4 children signed up. The children come to Akshay to learn things from his program such as improving attention span, coordination, and the ability to adapt to change.
