The American Heart Association recommends eating at least 2 servings of fish each week to get the required amount of Omega-3 fatty acids to keep your heart healthy.  Fish like salmon, albacore tuna, herring, and lake trout are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, as well as protein.

Research shows that Omega-3 fatty acids decrease the risk of abnormal heartbeats (which can lead to sudden death), decrease triglyceride levels, and can slightly lower blood pressure.  Other benefits are:

Pregnant women need them for their babies’ brains. Kids need them to learn. Adults get healthier hearts from them. The do-it-all nutrients known as omega-3 fatty acids appear to reduce pain in people with rheumatoid arthritis — and may help treat autism, bipolar disorder, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, ADHD and prostate cancer.

Even dogs and cats need omega-3s to stay healthy.

In addition to being heart-healthy, omega-3 fatty acids support brain health and mood and have also been linked to helping treat types of depression.  Breads and breakfast cereals containing flaxseed, walnuts, and flaxseed oil are plant sources of Omega-3s.

Many health experts agree that Omega-3 fatty acids are an essential nutrient for our bodies, but are also frequently missing from our diets.  To reduce the risks of eating contaminated fish from the ocean, fish oil supplements are the perfect alternative.

Excerpt from healthyomega3:

Not only are purified fish oil supplements the best source, they are also the most economical. A month’s supply will set you back less than $20 dollars. If you go buy a few fillets of salmon or tuna at the local fish market, you’ll spend that much just for one dinner.

Molecular distillation allows the oils to be separated from the bad contaminants. The rich, healthy omega 3 oils can then be encapsulated into soft gels for easy swallowing.

Always consult with your doctor before changing your diet or adding supplements, as each person is different and may require more or less of a nutrient.  Pregnant women must be especially careful when introducing new foods or supplements into their diet, and should always talk with their doctor first.
