A local Saucon Valley dad has decided it’s time to play a role in the lives of the Saucon Valley Elementary School children by establishing a local branch of the national group Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students). Men can be involved in their children’s school lives by volunteering one day a week to be present at the school and be a role model.
WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is the father involvement initiative of the National Center for Fathering that organizes fathers and father figures in order to provide positive male role models for the students and to enhance school security.
The program was established in 1998 after the tragic killing of 5 at a school in Jonesboro, Ark. when two 13 year old kids opened fire on students and teachers. Father, Jim Moore, stepped up in an effort to help the children feel safe at school after the incident. It has since developed into 1559 programs in 38 states and New Zealand. There are so many children without a father figure in their lives that benefit from the Watch D.O.G.S. program.
During 2003, WATCH D.O.G.S.® conducted a survey of 50 participating schools nationwide. Key findings:
89% agree that WATCH D.O.G.S.® is a valuable component of the school’s efforts to promote a safe and positive learning environment for students.
79% agree that since implementing the WATCH D.O.G.S.® program, the school has experienced an increase in father involvement in areas other than WATCH D.O.G.S.® (parent-teacher conferences, volunteerism in the classroom or after school, PTA/PTO involvement).
